ABOUT US

About Michael Barber

Mike Barber is a Guelph-area beekeeper with more than a decade of hands-on experience caring for honey bees. His work is rooted in observation, patience, and respect for the natural rhythm of the hive.

Mike pays close attention to queen performance, brood patterns, colony strength, food stores, mite pressure, weather, and seasonal changes. For him, good beekeeping means understanding what the bees are showing before deciding what they need.

Through his work, Mike supports healthy colonies, local honey production, and a stronger understanding of pollinators in Ontario. Each harvest reflects the Guelph area itself: its fields, gardens, trees, wildflowers, clover, goldenrod, asters, and changing seasons.

At the heart of Mike’s work is a simple belief: healthy bees come first.

Our Story

Our story starts with a simple respect for honey bees and the role they play in the world around us.

I began beekeeping in the Guelph area because I was drawn to the life inside the hive: the organization, the biology, the seasonal rhythm, and the way a colony works together as one living system. Over the years, that interest became hands-on experience, and the hives became both a responsibility and a way of staying closely connected to the land.

Beekeeping teaches you quickly that bees are not something you control. They are something you learn from. Every colony is different. Every season brings different weather, nectar flow, queen performance, mite pressure, and winter challenges. Good beekeeping means paying attention before acting. It means reading brood patterns, watching food stores, understanding colony strength, and making decisions that support the health of the hive.

In Ontario, that work matters more than ever. Honey bees face real pressure from Varroa mites, changing weather, forage gaps, pesticide exposure, queen issues, and difficult winters. Keeping bees healthy requires patience, science, practical experience, and a willingness to keep learning every season.

What began as a love for bees has grown into a deeper commitment to local beekeeping, pollinator health, and honest honey production. Our honey reflects the Guelph area itself: the fields, gardens, trees, wildflowers, clover, goldenrod, asters, and changing seasons that shape each harvest. No two years are exactly the same, and that is part of what makes local honey special.

At the heart of our work is a simple belief: healthy bees come first. Honey is the reward of a strong colony, not the reason to weaken one. We care for our hives with that in mind, respecting the bees, the season, and the natural systems that make beekeeping possible.

This is more than a business to us. It is stewardship, science, agriculture, and community — one hive, one season, and one jar of local honey at a time.
